BIBA @ BFW tomorrow!
It was the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960s and 70s, its founder Barbara Hulanicki is an iconic figure in London culture and fashion, now Barbara will be making an exclusive appearance at BFW!
Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960s and 70s. A phenomenon in the truest sense of the word, BIBA would leave an indelible mark on the minds and wardrobes of the customers who ventured through its doors. Following its closure in 1975, many have attempted to reproduce the magic. All have missed the key ingredient: the involvement of its creator, Barbara Hulanicki.
Established in the fashion industry as a designer, Barbara Hulanicki and her future husband launched the brand Biba. Evolving from shop to shop, Biba eventually climaxed in the gigantic 5-storey Art Deco department store on Kensington High Street. After the store collapsed, following a torturous legal battle with their former business partners, Barbara continued working in fashion, designing for Fiorucci and Cacharel.
Now for the first time, a film has been made depicting the life of the iconic Barbara Hulanicki, offering a rare insight in the woman herself, whilst reminding us of her seismic impact on the British fashion industry. Beyond Biba is now out on DVD and will be previewed and sold exclusively at Brighton Fashion Week 2010.
Beyond Biba tells Barbara is story chronologically: her childhood and subsequent emigration to the UK; the phenomenon of BIBA (using rare archive material); and her Miami reinvention. The film features a fascinating discussion between Barbara and controversial Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Gerald Posner about the history of Miami Beach. We witness Barbara’s preparation for an exhibition of her drawings in London and the subsequent private view, attended by fans and colleagues including Kate Moss, Ron Wood, Molly Parkin and Twiggy.
With the current obsession with all things BIBA, the film serves as a timely reminder of the woman who started it all.We are thrilled to welcome Barbara Halunicki to Brighton Fashion Week 2010, where she will join us at the Ready-to-Wear Shows & Fashion Market on Saturday 12th June from 11am onwards and join us on stage for an exclusive Q & A.
